What Is A Credit Union?
A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative, owned, and democratically controlled by its members and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at competitive rates, and delivering other financial services to its members.
As a cooperative, a credit union is unique in the financial world. Credit unions exist to serve their members. Gulf Credit Union is dedicated to the philosophy of “People Helping People.” Rather than paying profits to stockholders, credit unions return earnings to members in the form of dividends and improved member services at rates frequently more favorable than those available at banks.
About Us
In December 1939, nine people with a vision of bringing financial opportunities to those who normally could not afford them met in a dusty parking lot at Gulf Oil. This group founded Gulf Credit Union with just two employees and the goal of providing financial security, low-cost loans, and reasonable rates of return on savings. There were initially 440 shares subscribed. Within 30 days, there were 2,273 shares purchased.
Today, we are proud to have grown to nearly 90 employees serving over 24,000 members, with more than $325 million in assets. We have created strong relationships with our members for more than 85 years, and we consider it an honor to meet the needs of new members as well.
Persons who live, worship, work or attend school, as well as businesses and other legal entities in Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Chambers, Polk, Jasper, Liberty, Newton, Tyler counties and Bolivar Peninsula and persons who are members of the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation can become part of our growing financial family. Membership allows one to enjoy benefits including free bill pay, e-statements, an instant-issue debit card at all locations, the ability to choose your own PIN, mobile banking, low interest loan rates, checking accounts with overdraft protection, and much more.
We also offer you five convenient locations throughout Southeast Texas – branches in Beaumont, Bridge City, Fannett, Groves, Mid County, and our Administration Building in Port Arthur – as well as our mobile banking app, shared branching, online access and also the capability to bank virtually from anywhere you are with gulfanywhere.gecu.org.
